What is ADHD?

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting children and adults.

Originating in the brain, ADHD is characterized by a consistent pattern of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development.

This disorder is not just a childhood condition; many individuals continue to experience symptoms into adulthood. The exact cause of ADHD is not entirely understood.

Still, research suggests that genetics play a significant role, with other factors such as brain injuries, environmental exposures during pregnancy, or premature birth potentially contributing.

What Are The Symptoms?

ADHD symptoms can be grouped into two main categories: inattentiveness and hyperactivity-impulsivity.

Inattentiveness:
  • Frequently overlooking details and making careless mistakes in tasks.
  • Struggling to sustain attention in conversations or lengthy readings.
  • Appearing as though they’re not listening when spoken to directly.
  • Failing to follow instructions or failing to finish schoolwork, chores, or other duties.
  • Facing difficulties organizing tasks and activities.
  • Avoiding or being reluctant to engage in tasks that require sustained mental effort.
  • Frequently losing items like keys, glasses, or paperwork.
  • Being easily distracted by extraneous stimuli, including unrelated thoughts.
  • Being forgetful in daily activities, like forgetting to do chores or run errands.
Hyperactivity-Impulsivity:
  • Fidgeting with hands or feet or squirming in their seat.
  • Leaving their seat in situations where staying seated is expected, such as in the classroom or office.
  • Running or climbing in inappropriate situations (predominantly in children).
  • Unable to play or engage in activities quietly.
  • Often “on the go,” acting as if “driven by a motor.”
  • Talking excessively.
  • Blurting out answers before a question has been fully asked.
  • Struggling to wait their turn, such as while waiting in line.
  • Interrupting or intruding on others’ conversations or games.

What To Expect in an ADHD Evaluation at Engrace?

Interview with a Healthcare Provider

At the beginning of your ADHD evaluation at Engrace Behavioral Health Services, you or your child will have a detailed interview with one of our experienced healthcare providers. This interview is designed to gather a comprehensive clinical history.

Our provider will ask about symptoms, the duration of symptoms, and the impact of these symptoms on daily life. This is a crucial step in understanding the unique aspects of each patient’s situation.

QbTest

The QbTest is a central component of the ADHD evaluation process at Engrace. It is an FDA-cleared test that provides an objective measurement of ADHD symptoms.

During this test, you or your child will complete a 15 or 20-minute computer-based task to assess attention, impulse control, and activity level.

An infrared camera tracks movements throughout the test, clearly showing hyperactivity levels.

Completion of Rating Scales

In addition to the QbTest, you will be asked to complete one or more rating scales.

These scales are standardized questionnaires that help to assess the severity and frequency of ADHD symptoms.

They may be filled out by the patient, parents, teachers, or other significant individuals in the patient’s life. These scales are essential for providing a well-rounded view of the patient’s behavior in various settings

How Does QbTest Evaluate ADHD?

The QbTest is a trusted and reliable tool for assessing ADHD, as it has received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This clearance signifies that the QbTest meets stringent safety and effectiveness criteria, making it a valuable component of a comprehensive ADHD assessment.

The QbTest is designed to measure all three core symptom domains of ADHD:

  1. Hyperactivity: The test uses an infrared camera to track movements, providing objective data on activity levels during the test.

  2. Impulsivity: The QbTest assesses impulse control through computer tasks requiring quick and accurate responses.

  3. Inattention: The test measures the ability to sustain attention through tasks that require focus and concentration.

The primary purpose of the QbTest is to provide an objective, data-driven assessment of ADHD symptoms. It is used when evaluating potential ADHD symptoms in a patient and is also a valuable tool for measuring a patient’s response to ADHD treatment.

By comparing a patient’s performance with data from individuals of the same sex and age who do not have ADHD, healthcare providers at Engrace can gain a clearer understanding of the patient’s condition and tailor treatment plans effectively.

What Is The Procedure of QbTest?

The QbTest is designed to be efficient and focused. It involves a computer-based task that takes 15 or 20 minutes to complete.

This task measures attention, impulse control, and activity level in a structured and standardized setting.

During the QbTest, an infrared camera tracks the patient’s movements.

This technology captures objective data on the patient’s activity level, providing a clear and quantifiable measure of hyperactivity—one of the core symptom domains of ADHD.

After the test is completed, the patient’s performance is compared with normative data, which consists of test results from individuals of the same sex and age who do not have ADHD.

This comparison helps to identify significant deviations from typical behavior and aids in the diagnostic process.

What Is The Setup?

The QbTest setup is designed to be non-intrusive and comfortable for the patient.

It involves using an infrared camera, a headband with an infrared marker attached to it, a laptop computer, and a responder button that the patient will use to interact with the test.

How We Interpret The Data From Qbtest?

The raw data is immediately available as soon as the QbTest is completed. This data provides an initial look at the patient’s performance during the test, offering valuable insights into attention, impulsivity, and activity levels.

The raw data from the QbTest is thorough and detailed, and it is the role of your healthcare provider at Engrace Behavioral Health Services to interpret this data.

Our clinicians integrate the QbTest results with clinical history and rating scales, forming a comprehensive picture of the patient’s condition.

In some cases, the interpretation of the QbTest results and other relevant information may necessitate a follow-up appointment.

This allows your healthcare provider to discuss the results in detail, answer any questions you may have, and outline potential treatment options based on the findings.

How To Prepare For a QbTest at Engrace?

Ensuring Adequate Sleep

To ensure the most accurate results, patients must have a good night’s sleep before taking the QbTest.

Adequate sleep helps to ensure that the patient is alert and able to focus during the test.

Avoiding Excessive Caffeine Consumption

On the test day, avoiding excessive caffeine-containing products, such as coffee or energy drinks, is advisable.

This helps to prevent any potential interference with the assessment of attention and activity levels.

Guidance on ADHD Medication Intake Before the Test

If you or your child are currently taking ADHD medication, please ensure that you take the medication as directed by your healthcare provider.

Our office will schedule the test for a specific number of hours after the medication is taken, depending on the type of medication.

This ensures that the test results accurately reflect the patient’s condition under their current treatment plan.

Preparing a Child for the Test

For children taking the QbTest, explaining the process simply and reassuringly is important.

Let them know that they will be taking a test on a computer designed to be boring but not last very long. Inform them that they will wear a headband during the test but that it does not hurt.

Assure them they will be in a room alone, but a family member can stand outside if that makes them feel more comfortable.

What Is The Frequency of QbTest?

The frequency of QbTest administration can vary based on individual circumstances. For some patients, a single test may be sufficient for diagnostic purposes.

For others, especially those undergoing treatment for ADHD, periodic re-testing may be recommended to monitor treatment effectiveness and make necessary adjustments.
